The European Union has a patchwork of data privacy laws that exist across the 28 member states and dates back to the mid 1990’s. After 4 years of negotiation the European Union may have at last reach an agreement on a replacement legislation which would provide consistency across the EU under a single set of laws.
Its amazing how slow the EU works as I was writing about these changes back in 2011. Based upon current expectations these new laws wouldn’t be in effect until 2018.
If approved this agreement will be the biggest change in data protection legislation in over 20 years with, for example, fines of up to 4% of a company’s global turnover.
